Great gadget! I love this Box! August 20, 2010 Claudia P. Williams (Port Arthur, TX) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am "training" my dear husband to use the remote so we can DROP all "paid" television! You do have to get Playon(It's $39. for first year $20 a year thereafter. Or just go with the $79.99 Lifetime license, that's what I am getting) . But for a small start-up you can kiss that monthly $50-70 cable/satellite bill goodbye! I will be purchasing another for our bedroom. Then...so long Dish!
I highly recommend this if 1. you have a good internet speed(3-6 mbs) 2. Plenty of ram , or a throw down pc you can use just for the Playon...it's a resource hog! You should have at least 1GB , I recommend 3-4Gb. 3. You are sick of "Paying" for TV!
Does what I wanted - that's enough August 20, 2010 Johnnie L. Sloan 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am writing this review for people who may need it. This box is very cool, but it may not be what you think it is. What it is: Media player that can play files (audio and video) from USB drives, networked computer's shared folder and UPnP media server software on the networked computer (PlayOn). What it is not: It is not going to replace a cable or satellite program you have. You have to really know how to obtain content to use this... Keep in mind also that you cannot control web content like you can on a PC. You can't mouse or click options and things in web video (like related videos in Youtube).
We used the trial of PlayOn (it is a bit costly, look there before you buy this) and liked it, but did not love it. Hulu has a lot of good content that can be played, Netflix is a little glitchy and because you are trying to play streaming content, sometimes slow.. Speed can be a big issue. That said, what this thing does, it does pretty well. I have not found a video format it can't play. The quality is very good. It is fun to network share my music folders to be played in the front room. And best of all, no waiting for DVDs to burn! Just play files directly from PC to this box. I am very happy with this... wish PlayOn was cheaper and there were more options for content with PlayOn or some other media server that can play web based content.
Great player, great price August 18, 2010 starsia (CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I already have one of this. I Saw the dented box deal and couldn't pass on it. Better yet, I received a brand new unit. What a deal. This is a great media player. It played everything I throw at it. Wireless is not build-in but you can buy an adapter at meritline for around $11. Setup is very easy. I love this thing.
Not perfect, but excellent value August 14, 2010 Greg Granville 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The unit I received looked brand new. No way to tell it was "re-certified".
Although the hardware is excellent (especially the design of the remote), the firmware has a few issues. Brite-View seems to be (slowly) working on them, and has a very active customer support forum. The firmware is in a state of flux, and the user interface may be more complicated than a non-techie user would feel comfortable with.
If you like geek toys, and don't mind a little tinkering, you will probably love the CinemaTube. However, casual users may be put off by it. Although it plays media across a LAN connection just fine, file copying across a LAN seems a bit slow.
Be aware that if you want to stream internet TV to this box, you'll need media server software (typically PlayOn) running on your PC. Despite what some people claim, none of the popular media player boxes can play internet TV directly... At least not yet.
For me, this was the best bang for the buck... at least until Google TV comes out.
Just like new July 17, 2010 D. Farris (Memphis, TN USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Item was shipped/received quickly. Appeared to be brand new. Not a "pretty" UI but does what I wanted, which was to use with PlayOn streaming software.
